What each availability status means
The state confirms a remote real exam
You can complete the official knowledge test remotely if you meet the state’s account, device, identity, and proctor rules. Some states still require an office visit before or after the exam.
Age, school, provider, or application rules apply
The online route may be teen-only, adult-only, offered through an approved school, or shown only after an official application determines eligibility.
Use an office or authorized testing site
The official source reviewed did not show a general at-home real permit exam. You may still be able to apply, schedule, study, or take a practice test online.
Before you start
What an at-home permit test usually requires
Many official systems reject phones and tablets. A keyboard, mouse, current browser, and reliable internet are common requirements.
Remote systems may photograph or monitor the applicant to protect exam integrity. Keep your face visible and the room quiet.
You may need an official account, Social Security number, state ID details, application number, or personal-history verification.
Teen applicants in several states need a parent, guardian, or approved adult to register, supervise, or certify the exam.
The real test is closed-book. Using a phone, handbook, another person, or another browser window can cause failure or penalties.
Passing online often covers only the knowledge test. Identity documents, vision, photo, signatures, and permit printing may still happen in person.
After a passing score
A test result is not always permission to drive
Do not start driving only because a remote screen says “pass.” In most states, the online exam result must be attached to an application and converted into an issued learner permit. Follow the official instructions for documents, vision screening, photo, fee payment, parent consent, and permit printing or pickup.
Practice vs. the real exam
How to tell which online test you are opening
Practice test
- Can be repeated freely
- Does not require identity verification
- Does not issue a state test result
- Should explain missed answers
Official online permit exam
- Starts from a state agency or approved provider
- Uses identity and exam-security controls
- May limit attempts and charge a fee
- Sends the result into the state licensing process
Common questions
Online permit test FAQ
Can I take my real permit test online from home?
It depends on your state, age, and application path. Some states offer a broad remote exam, while others limit it to teens, adults, approved schools, or selected applicants. Use the state finder and official source above.
Can I take the online permit test on my phone?
Usually not. Many official systems require a desktop or laptop with a keyboard, mouse, webcam, supported browser, and stable internet. Check the device rules before paying.
Does passing the online test give me a permit immediately?
Not always. Most applicants still need to complete identity, vision, photo, fee, signature, or permit printing steps before they are legally allowed to practice driving.
Can a parent help during an online permit test?
A parent may be required to register or supervise a teen, but cannot provide answers. Remote exams use monitoring and states may impose penalties for assistance or other test fraud.
Is an online DMV practice test the same as the official exam?
No. A practice test helps you study and can be repeated, but it does not create an official state result. The real exam begins through the licensing agency or its approved testing provider.
Why does the finder say “limited” for my state?
Limited means the web-based or at-home path has a meaningful restriction, such as applicant age, school enrollment, approved-provider use, a required pre-visit, or eligibility determined during the state application.
How often are these state rules checked?
This table was reviewed on July 24, 2026 using official state licensing pages, manuals, and approved testing instructions. Because programs can change, the official state link remains the final source.
Research method
How this 50-state table was verified
US Permit Prep checked official state licensing pages, driver manuals, and state-authorized testing instructions. A state was labeled “at home” only when an official source clearly described a remote real knowledge exam. “Limited” is used when eligibility depends on age, school, provider, or application route. If no general remote exam appeared in the official source, the state is labeled “in person” rather than inferred from a third-party blog.
