Quick answer

How long is a learner's permit valid?

There is no nationwide duration. Official examples range from 90 days for one New Jersey examination permit to approximately five years in New York, while other permits last one or two years or expire when the holder turns 18.

  • Use the expiration date printed on the credential and the current official state instructions.
  • Do not confuse permit validity with a minimum holding period or supervised-hours requirement.
  • If the permit expires, stop practicing until the state issues or confirms a current credential.

Check the date printed on the permit, then confirm whether your state calls the next transaction a renewal, extension, or new application.

How long does a learner’s permit last? There is no single US expiration period. The official examples in this guide range from a 90-day New Jersey non-GDL examination permit to a New York learner permit that is valid for approximately five years. Other permits expire after one or two years, when the holder turns 18, when immigration status ends, or when a full license is issued.

Your printed expiration date and the current instructions from the agency that issued the permit are the final answer. Do not confuse that date with a minimum holding period: a state can require you to hold a permit for six months even though the permit itself remains valid much longer.

Read the credential first

A national average cannot replace your printed date

Permit names and timelines differ by age, state, immigration status, and license path. Use the table as a comparison, not permission to drive. If the permit is expired, stop practicing until the issuing agency confirms that you have a valid credential again.

Five dates people often confuse

Before asking whether a permit is still valid, identify which clock you are looking at. These dates can appear in the same application without meaning the same thing.

1. Permit expiration

The last date the credential authorizes supervised practice. It may be printed on the permit or tied to an age or status event.

2. Application validity

The period in which an application, fee, or passed test remains active. California, for example, says the application and fee are valid for 12 months.

3. Minimum holding period

The shortest time you must hold the permit before a road test or next license stage. This is an eligibility wait, not the expiration date.

4. Supervised-practice deadline

A teen licensing program may require a driving log or training to be completed before the permit or age-based credential expires.

5. Road-test or course validity

A road-test appointment, knowledge-test result, driver-education certificate, or training completion can have its own deadline.

How long learner permits last: official state examples

The table uses current official agency language available at the time of review. It intentionally does not force every state into one format because some agencies describe an application period, an age-based expiration, or several permit types instead of one simple duration.

State Official validity example Important detail Official source
California Application and fee valid for 12 months If the provisional permit or application expires before the required six-month hold is completed, DMV says to reapply. Cumulative permit time may receive credit. California DMV
Texas Under-18 learner license expires on the 18th birthday A replacement keeps the current expiration date; it does not extend the license. Texas DPS
New York Approximately five years The exact expiration date depends on the applicant’s date of birth and application date. New York DMV
Pennsylvania One year from initial issue A qualifying extension is valid for one year. A duplicate remains valid only for the rest of the original permit period. PennDOT
Illinois 24 months Teen applicants ages 15 through 17 generally must hold the instruction permit for at least nine consecutive months before licensing. Illinois Rules of the Road
Georgia Two years for the Class C instructional permit Use the Class C permit instructions rather than a general fee snippet for the applicable credential. Georgia DDS
New Jersey Two years for student and GDL examination permits The non-GDL examination permit is listed as 90 days. The permit type matters. New Jersey MVC
Michigan Level 1 learner license expires when the teen turns 18 The Level 1 license generally must be held for at least six consecutive months before the skills-test stage. Michigan SOS
Massachusetts Two years or the length of the applicant’s authorized US stay If the permit expires, the RMV says the applicant must reapply and retake the exam. Massachusetts RMV
Connecticut Two years or until a driver license is issued The minimum teen or adult holding period is separate from the two-year validity period. Connecticut DMV

Why is there no single 50-state number here? Permit products can differ by age and program even within one state. New Jersey alone lists both two-year and 90-day examination permits. Publishing one generic number per state without identifying the credential would be misleading.

What happens if your learner permit expires?

An expired permit normally stops authorizing supervised driving. Do not assume there is a grace period, and do not drive to the licensing office using the expired permit. Arrange lawful transportation and check the issuing agency’s current renewal, extension, or reapplication instructions.

  1. Stop supervised practice. Expiration is different from losing the physical card; an expired credential is no longer current.
  2. Open the official state transaction page. Look for “renew learner permit,” “extend permit,” “new permit,” or “reapply.”
  3. Check whether testing is required again. Massachusetts explicitly says an expired permit requires reapplication and another exam. Other states may preserve some records or use a different process.
  4. Ask what prior time still counts. Save the expired permit and original issue record. California tells applicants to bring expired and valid provisional permits to the drive test when cumulative credit applies.
  5. Reschedule the road test if needed. A future appointment does not keep an expired permit valid.

Do not assume

A road-test booking is not a permit extension

If your appointment is after the printed expiration date, contact the testing office before test day. Confirm what credential must be current, whether the appointment can remain, and what proof preserves the original holding date.

Does the minimum holding period restart?

It depends on whether the state treats the transaction as a duplicate, extension, renewal, or new application. A true duplicate normally preserves the underlying record and expiration date. An extension may preserve part of the history. A new permit can create a new issue date, but a state may still give documented credit for earlier time.

California provides a useful example: when the provisional application expires before the six-month requirement is complete, the applicant must reapply, but DMV says accumulated holding time can receive credit when both the expired and valid permits are presented at the drive test. Do not assume that policy applies elsewhere.

Keep these records together:

  • the expired permit or a readable record of it;
  • the original issue date and permit number;
  • renewal, extension, or reapplication receipts;
  • driver-education and supervised-hours records;
  • road-test appointment confirmation; and
  • any written agency message about holding-period credit.

Use the supervised driving hours by state guide to separate practice-hour requirements from the permit’s expiration date.

Do you need a renewal, replacement, extension, or new permit?

Transaction Usually fits when What to verify
Replacement or duplicate The permit is active but the card is lost, stolen, damaged, or unreadable. Temporary document, delivery time, fee, road-test acceptance, and whether the same expiration remains.
Renewal The agency allows an expiring permit to continue through a renewal transaction. Eligibility window, new validity period, required documents, fee, and retesting.
Extension The state provides extra time under a specific rule, such as Pennsylvania’s qualifying learner-permit extension. Who qualifies, extension length, form, proof, fee, and whether prior test results remain valid.
Reapplication or new permit The old permit or application expired and cannot simply be renewed. Knowledge and vision retests, a new fee, documents, new issue date, and holding-period credit.

If the card is missing but still active, use the separate lost learner permit replacement guide. Ordering a duplicate is not a way to renew an expired permit.

A practical 60-day expiration plan

60

Sixty days before expiration

Check your progress: required holding time, supervised hours, course completion, road-test readiness, and appointment availability. Open the current official renewal or extension page.

30

Thirty days before expiration

Book the road test or permit transaction if eligible. Gather identity, residency, application, course, and driving-log records. Confirm whether the current permit must remain valid on test day.

7

Seven days before expiration

Do not rely on mail arriving in time. Save receipts and temporary credentials, verify the appointment, and arrange lawful transportation if the new document is not active.

0

On and after the expiration date

Stop driving under that permit unless the issuing agency has provided a valid extension or replacement credential. A submitted form alone may not authorize driving.

What if your road test is scheduled after the permit expires?

Contact the road-test office before appearing. Ask three direct questions:

  1. Must the learner permit be unexpired on the test date?
  2. Will a temporary renewal or extension document be accepted?
  3. What proves the original issue date and minimum holding period?

Then check the road-test preparation hub and the road-test vehicle requirements. Permit status is only one test-day requirement; the vehicle, registration, insurance, accompanying driver, and appointment documents also need to qualify.

Special cases that can change the expiration date

  • Turning 18: Texas under-18 learner licenses and Michigan Level 1 learner licenses use the 18th birthday as an important expiration point.
  • Limited lawful presence: Massachusetts says a permit can be valid for two years or the length of the applicant’s authorized US stay.
  • Moving to another state: Do not assume a learner permit transfers. Connecticut explicitly says out-of-state learner permits are not transferable.
  • Suspension or cancellation: The date printed on the card does not override a suspension, cancellation, or withdrawn application.
  • Different permit class: Motorcycle, commercial, adult, teen, student, and examination permits can have different terms.

Next step

Check the permit, the official page, and your road-test timeline

Start with the date printed on your permit. Then use your state’s official page to identify the correct transaction and protect proof of the original issue date. If your road test is approaching, verify permit status before practicing or traveling to the appointment.

Learner permit expiration questions

How long does a learner’s permit usually last?

There is no universal duration. Official state examples range from 90 days for one New Jersey permit type to approximately five years in New York. One-year, two-year, and age-based permits are also common.

Does a learner permit expire on your birthday?

Sometimes. Texas says an under-18 learner license expires on the holder’s 18th birthday, and Michigan says a Level 1 learner license expires when the teen turns 18. Other states use an issue-date period or another formula.

Can you renew an expired learner permit?

Only if your state and permit type allow it. Some states offer an extension or renewal, while others require a new application and another knowledge test. Use the issuing agency’s exact transaction instructions.

Do you have to retake the written test when a permit expires?

It depends on the state. Massachusetts says an expired permit requires reapplication and retaking the exam. Another state may have a renewal or extension path that preserves test results.

Does the learner permit holding period restart after expiration?

Not always. The outcome depends on whether the transaction is a duplicate, extension, renewal, or new application. California can give cumulative credit when the applicant presents both expired and valid provisional permits.

Can you drive with an expired learner permit?

Do not drive unless the issuing agency has provided a current credential or explicitly valid extension. A road-test appointment, submitted renewal, receipt, phone photo, or old card does not automatically authorize driving.

What if the road test is after the permit expiration date?

Contact the testing office before the appointment. Confirm whether a current permit or temporary extension is accepted, whether the appointment must be rescheduled, and what proves the original holding period.
