A learner permit is permission to practice, not a full driver license

You may drive only under the restrictions printed on the credential and imposed by the issuing state. Common requirements include a qualified licensed supervisor in the front passenger seat, carrying the permit, wearing seat belts, and avoiding prohibited phone use, passengers, locations, or times.

Rules differ by age and state. Before every unfamiliar trip, check the issuing-state rules, the rules where you will drive, and the vehicle’s insurance coverage.

Permit-to-license path

What happens after you get a learner permit?

  1. Read the restrictions on your credential. A permit may include age, corrective-lens, daylight, location, passenger, or supervising-driver conditions.
  2. Choose an eligible supervisor. Confirm the person’s minimum age, license class, driving-experience requirement, and where the supervisor must sit.
  3. Practice in stages. Begin with vehicle controls and low-risk locations, then add intersections, traffic, higher speeds, night driving, and poor weather only when legal and appropriate.
  4. Record required practice. Teen licensing paths often require a signed log with total and night hours. Use the exact form accepted by your state.
  5. Meet the holding period. A state may require the permit to be held for months before a teen can take the road test. Violations can delay that date.
  6. Prepare the driver and vehicle. Confirm the appointment, documents, registration, insurance, equipment, and skills before test day.

Learner permit FAQ

Common questions before supervised practice

Can you drive alone with a learner permit?

Generally no. A learner permit is designed for supervised practice. The required supervisor’s age, license, experience, relationship, and seating position depend on the state and the permit holder’s age.

Can you drive out of state with a learner permit?

Sometimes, but never assume. The destination must recognize the permit, the issuing state must allow its use outside the state, and the driver must satisfy applicable restrictions in both places. Use our out-of-state learner permit guide before planning a trip.

Does a learner driver need to be added to car insurance?

Insurer rules vary. Some policies cover a household permit holder under the supervising adult’s policy, while others require notification when the permit is issued. Call the insurer before practice begins and document the answer.

Do practice hours from another state count?

That depends on the destination state’s licensing rules and the evidence you can provide. Some states credit an out-of-state permit holding period or training, while others require a new permit or local forms. Keep the permit, driving log, education certificate, and official driving record.

Can a learner permit holder drive on highways or at night?

Only when the issuing and destination rules allow it. Some states restrict locations or times for young permit holders; others allow them with a qualified supervisor. Check the exact permit restrictions before driving.
