Know the air-brake check, not only the written answers
Passing a knowledge test is only part of avoiding an air-brake restriction. FMCSA also identifies component recognition, a proper air-brake systems check, and a skills test in a representative full-air-brake vehicle as important parts of the licensing path.
- Inspect visible components. Check the compressor drive where visible, hoses, chambers, drums or discs, linings, pushrods, and slack adjusters for damage, leaks, looseness, and contamination.
- Build normal pressure. Observe both gauges on a dual system and confirm the governor and warning devices act within the accepted range.
- Test air loss. Follow the exact state procedure for static and applied leakage. Identify whether the rate is acceptable for your vehicle configuration.
- Test the low-air warning. With the key in the correct position, reduce pressure and identify when the light, buzzer, or other warning activates.
- Test spring-brake activation. Continue reducing pressure and identify when the applicable parking or protection valves pop out, or use the approved procedure for a vehicle designed differently.
- Test parking and service brakes. Confirm the parking brake holds, then check service-brake response at low speed for pulling, delay, or unusual feel.
